Understand the application

The clear finish does more than complete the look.

Decorative flakes create the visual pattern; the base coats and clear finish form the working system. Traffic, daylight, cleaning and wet-use conditions should guide the clear-coat and texture selection alongside the preferred blend.

Garages and utility spaces

Review tyre contact, oils, existing sealers and slab moisture. A clean-looking floor still needs sound preparation and a compatible coating schedule.

Reception and commercial corridors

Choose blend size, contrast and sheen around lighting and the expected cleaning routine. Confirm how entrances and thresholds will be detailed.

Amenities and selected wet-use areas

Discuss texture, coving, drainage and the actual contaminants. A decorative flake broadcast alone does not establish a slip classification.

Chip size, colours, broadcast coverage and the base tone affect the overall appearance. Agree the selected system’s application schedule rather than choosing from a screen alone.

Sheen and texture

The clear finish changes depth, gloss and surface feel. Review a finished sample, including any specified traction treatment.

Daylight and maintenance

Ask ALKA to select the finish for the light exposure and duty. Protect busy entries from grit and use the approved cleaning method to preserve appearance.

Practical questions

Before you choose the floor.

Are ALKA903 and ALKA912 the same build?

They are separate published pathways. ALKA903 uses an ALKA110 pigmented base; ALKA912 uses ALKA110S. Confirm the complete current specification for the chosen system.

Are flake floors always non-slip?

No. Wet-use performance depends on the complete surface, contamination and footwear. Select and assess the finished texture against the project requirements.

Can flake flooring hide cracks and movement joints?

The pattern can reduce the visual prominence of minor surface variation, but cracks must be assessed and repaired appropriately. Required movement joints must remain functional.

Choose coverage before colour

Partial flake combines a visible base colour with scattered chips. Full flake creates a denser decorative field and changes material use, texture and sealing requirements. Compare both using the intended base colour and clear finish.

Finish the broadcast properly

The applicator must manage broadcast coverage, remove loose material and prepare the surface before the approved clear coat. Clear-coat consumption depends on the profile and selected system. Inadequate sealing or uncontrolled texture can make cleaning harder.

Coordinate practical edges

Agree doorway transitions, coving, stairs and movement-joint details. The flake field does not replace a waterproofing or structural joint design. Retain the installed product and blend information for future maintenance and repairs.

Before ordering or application

Use the current TDS and safety data for the exact product and supplied kit. Confirm substrate preparation, moisture limits, mixing, coverage, coat thickness, recoat intervals and full-service cure. Where a direct PDF is not listed, request the product-specific document from ALKA technical support before proceeding.

More answers for your project

Are the flakes themselves the waterproofing?

No. Flakes provide a decorative component within a coating system. Waterproofing or containment performance, where needed, depends on a specifically approved complete build and its joints, penetrations and terminations.

Will flakes come loose after installation?

The completed system should be prepared and sealed according to the approved schedule. Loose chips or sharp protrusions after handover warrant inspection. Do not assume more clear coating is the solution until the underlying application and cure have been checked.

Does full flake automatically give better slip resistance?

No. Flake density, surface preparation, clear-coat build and any specified slip treatment all affect the final surface. Compare representative finished samples and obtain the required assessment for the actual use conditions.

Can I choose colours in person?

Yes. Visit the ALKA showroom to compare flake blends, base colours and finished samples, and ask about take-home samples. Check them in your own lighting; screen colours are only a starting point.

Can the floor be refreshed without replacing the flakes?

Potentially, if the existing build is sound and compatible. Cleaning, decontamination and the specified preparation are needed before a maintenance clear coat. Areas with adhesion failure, moisture damage or deep wear need repair rather than simple recoating.

Make the quote a complete scope

Ask the proposal to identify preparation and repairs, the selected ALKA products, coating stages, finish sample, joint and edge details, installation stages and the permitted return to service. Include cleaning instructions and the technical documents in the handover so future maintenance follows the installed system.
