Firewater Equipment & Support Steel

Corrosion protection for firewater equipment exteriors.

SERVICE & APPLICATIONS

Protection matched to the asset.

Firewater pipework, pump skids and support structures need external protection that preserves the specified finish and supports maintenance. ALKA protective systems address suitable steel surfaces around this equipment, with clear separation from the performance of the fire-protection installation itself.

Pipe and pump exteriors

Select a coating build for the substrate, indoor or outdoor exposure and required identification colour.

Supports and skids

Detail welds, edges and bolted connections so the protective build covers more than the broad visible surfaces.

Maintenance access

Keep labels, inspection points and equipment functions accessible within the approved work method.

ALKYD PRIMERS · ENAMELS · SINGLE-PACK FINISHING

Protective enamel for suitable equipment exteriors

Selected external pump frames, cabinets, supports and above-ground ancillary metalwork can be considered for a single-pack primer/enamel finish in ordinary atmospheric service. Choose the product around the metal, retained coating and environmental exposure, with the required identification colour agreed in advance.

Products to assess for the job

Select a complete, compatible primer and finish. The products above are options by role, not a blanket approval to combine every primer and topcoat.

What the applicator or specifier needs

01 · Define the component and duty

Record the asset owner requirements, identification colours and external exposure. Treat equipment function and any mandated performance approvals as separate requirements.

02 · Prepare and prove compatibility

Plan surface preparation around labels, seals, moving parts and inspection points. Mask items that must remain uncoated and follow the equipment manufacturer instructions.

03 · Plan handling and return to service

Agree reinstatement and inspection with the maintenance team. A decorative or corrosion-protection finish does not establish equipment certification or a fire-resistance rating.

Write a usable coating schedule

Specify the substrate and preparation, exact primer and finish, individual-coat dry-film thickness, application method, thinning limits, recoat interval and service-cure requirement from current product data. For repainting, document the retained coating and a representative compatibility trial before full application.

Choose the coating for the exposure

Internal wetted surfaces, potable-water contact, fireproofing and high-temperature duty require their own approved systems.

A single-pack route can simplify small batches and routine repainting because it does not require mixing a separate hardener. It still depends on sound preparation, suitable film build and the correct recoat window. Where exposure or the required maintenance interval is more demanding, assess the relevant two-pack epoxy, polyurethane or specialist lining system.

Does fast drying mean the part is ready for service?

No. Touch-dry, recoatable, handleable and fully cured describe different stages. Use the selected product data and actual application conditions to plan each stage. Excessive film build, early overcoating or premature handling can compromise the finish; adding extra thinner or a hardener is not a substitute for the specified application procedure.

SPECIFICATION & APPLICATION

From surface preparation to return to service.

Build the coating schedule around the substrate and the work that can be achieved on site. For refurbishment, assess the adhesion and compatibility of retained coatings before defining repair boundaries.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Details that affect system selection.

Is this passive fire protection?

No. Coating the exterior of a firewater pipe or pump skid is different from protecting structural steel against fire. Any fire-rated system requires its own tested design and approved components.

What belongs in the final technical submission?

Include current TDS and SDS, substrate preparation, the product and thickness schedule, application conditions, inspection criteria and cure requirements. For chemical or immersed service, include written suitability for the actual exposure. Any required certification or durability commitment must be supported by the relevant evidence.

Application boundaries

These systems provide corrosion protection; they are not intumescent coatings and do not establish a fire-resistance rating or equipment certification. Fire-system design, operation and acceptance remain separate.
