ALKA · AUSTRALIAN COATINGS MANUFACTURER
Manufacturing Facilities
Coordinated protection across production and service areas.
SERVICE & APPLICATIONS
Protection matched to the asset.
Production facilities combine steel frames, equipment supports, concrete floors and occasional containment areas. ALKA offers separate protective and flooring system routes so each surface can be selected for its operating conditions without forcing one coating across the entire facility.
Plant steel
Frames, machinery supports and service structures need protection matched to internal or external exposure.
Wet and washdown areas
Record cleaning liquids, wetting frequency and substrate condition when specifying a barrier system.
Production floors
Select concrete flooring for traffic, moisture, impact, cleaning and slip requirements through the dedicated flooring library.
ALKYD PRIMERS · ENAMELS · SINGLE-PACK FINISHING
Everyday finishing alongside engineered protection
Manufacturing sites need both production finishes and specialist protection. Single-pack alkyd primers and enamels can suit fabricated parts, machinery covers, racks, cabinets and dry service steel, while process areas, washdown zones and production floors require separate selection.
Products to assess for the job
- ALKA 401 · Alkyd zinc phosphate primer
Prepared carbon steel; a corrosion-inhibiting primer for compatible alkyd and enamel finishing routes.
- ALKA 402 · Single-pack acrylic etch primer
A substrate-specific adhesion option for steel and suitable galvanised or aluminium components. This is a thermoplastic acrylic primer, not an alkyd.
- ALKA 403 · Red oxide anti-corrosive primer
A primer option for prepared ferrous metal, fabricated steel and general maintenance; confirm the selected finish compatibility.
- ALKA 410 · Rapid-cure protective enamel
A gloss finishing option for machinery, fabricated components and maintenance work over a compatible prepared and primed surface.
- ALKA 411 · Satin black / chassis enamel
A black finishing option for chassis, frames, transport assemblies and suitable equipment refurbishment.
- ALKA 415 · Hammer-tone finish
A decorative textured finish for machine covers, cabinets, enclosures and fabricated metal items where appearance is part of the brief.
Select a complete, compatible primer and finish. The products above are options by role, not a blanket approval to combine every primer and topcoat.
What the applicator or specifier needs
Create a component schedule with substrate, indoor/outdoor location, cleaning regime, appearance and handling requirements. Include fabrication and assembly stages.
Standardise cleaning and preparation for each substrate. Confirm compatibility with shop primers and retained coatings; use a representative trial where repainting is involved.
Agree the finish sample, recoat and handling window and inspection records before batch work. Check coverage on edges and recessed areas as well as the visible face.
Write a usable coating schedule
Specify the substrate and preparation, exact primer and finish, individual-coat dry-film thickness, application method, thinning limits, recoat interval and service-cure requirement from current product data. For repainting, document the retained coating and a representative compatibility trial before full application.
Choose the coating for the exposure
Chemical containment, aggressive washdown, ESD requirements and traffic-bearing floors need dedicated systems and evidence for the required service.
A single-pack route can simplify small batches and routine repainting because it does not require mixing a separate hardener. It still depends on sound preparation, suitable film build and the correct recoat window. Where exposure or the required maintenance interval is more demanding, assess the relevant two-pack epoxy, polyurethane or specialist lining system.
Does fast drying mean the part is ready for service?
No. Touch-dry, recoatable, handleable and fully cured describe different stages. Use the selected product data and actual application conditions to plan each stage. Excessive film build, early overcoating or premature handling can compromise the finish; adding extra thinner or a hardener is not a substitute for the specified application procedure.
SELECT THE COMPLETE BUILD
ALKA systems for this application.
| System | Why select it | Coating build | Total DFT |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALKA-9931 General Industrial | Balanced protection, appearance and cost without requiring a zinc-rich primer Prepared steel; moderate internal or external industrial atmospheric exposure | Alka 416 single-pack epoxy coating → Alka 413 high-build epoxy → Alka 421 polyurethane finish | 225–275 µm |
| ALKA-9940 Economical Maintenance | Cost-effective protection for routine maintenance where exposure is not severe Prepared steel in mild to moderate industrial atmospheric conditions | Alka 416 single-pack epoxy coating → Alka 412 or Alka 413 maintenance epoxy | 200–250 µm |
| ALKA-9935 Glass-Flake Barrier Lining | High-build glass-flake barrier delivers strong resistance to permeation, wet service and abrasion Prepared steel or concrete exposed to wet service, abrasion, splash, spillage or aggressive industrial conditions | Substrate-specific primer where required → Alka 414 Glass Flake Epoxy → optional approved build or finish coat | 400–750 µm |
DFT = dry-film thickness. These are nominal system totals; individual-coat thicknesses and application conditions belong in the final coating schedule.
SPECIFICATION & APPLICATION
From surface preparation to return to service.
Build the coating schedule around the substrate and the work that can be achieved on site. For refurbishment, assess the adhesion and compatibility of retained coatings before defining repair boundaries.
- 01Production zones and substrates
- 02Cleaning and spillage
- 03Traffic and impact
- 04Shutdown and ventilation requirements
Record surface preparation, environmental conditions, coverage at details and coat thickness. Allow for the specified recoat and cure periods, then inspect and repair defects before release to service.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
Details that affect system selection.
Can one epoxy cover the steel and the floor?
A common resin type does not make the systems interchangeable. Steel primers, floor preparation, traffic resistance, film build and finish requirements differ. Specify each substrate and function separately.
What belongs in the final technical submission?
Include current TDS and SDS, substrate preparation, the product and thickness schedule, application conditions, inspection criteria and cure requirements. For chemical or immersed service, include written suitability for the actual exposure. Any required certification or durability commitment must be supported by the relevant evidence.
Food contact, electrical resistance, controlled environments and process containment are distinct requirements. They need relevant evidence for the selected system and exact use.
CONCRETE FLOORING
Select the floor as a complete system.
Separate floor performance from steelwork protection. Compare ALKA flooring builds for traffic, moisture, chemical exposure, cleaning and the required finish.
