Secondary Containment

Line the bund for the material it must contain.

SERVICE & APPLICATIONS

Protection matched to the asset.

Secondary containment needs more than a generic protective finish. ALKA glass-flake and chemical-resistant lining routes address prepared steel or concrete bunds and sumps, with the build chosen around the likely spill and cleanup conditions.

Spill exposure

Define the stored substances, concentrations and how long a spill could remain before removal.

Substrate and details

Concrete defects, moisture, joints and penetrations need a coordinated preparation and detailing plan.

Cleaning and inspection

Include cleanup chemicals and temperatures. Plan inspection and repair before the area returns to service.

ALKYD PRIMERS · ENAMELS · SINGLE-PACK FINISHING

Ancillary enamel finishes outside the containment envelope

Single-pack enamels may be useful on selected dry frames, cabinets and service items associated with a containment installation. Keep them outside the defined chemical-contact envelope: the bund floor, walls, joints and penetrations need a lining selected for the material they must contain.

Products to assess for the job

Select a complete, compatible primer and finish. The products above are options by role, not a blanket approval to combine every primer and topcoat.

What the applicator or specifier needs

01 · Define the component and duty

Mark the containment boundary and credible spill or splash areas on the coating schedule. Include emergency exposure as well as normal operating conditions.

02 · Prepare and prove compatibility

Protect prepared lining surfaces from contamination during adjacent steelwork painting. Treat the metal finishing and lining preparation as separate work packages.

03 · Plan handling and return to service

Identify each coating at handover and record where it was applied. Inspection and release criteria for the bund must follow the approved lining specification.

Write a usable coating schedule

Specify the substrate and preparation, exact primer and finish, individual-coat dry-film thickness, application method, thinning limits, recoat interval and service-cure requirement from current product data. For repainting, document the retained coating and a representative compatibility trial before full application.

Choose the coating for the exposure

A single-pack alkyd or enamel is not proposed here as a chemical bund lining, immersion coating or substitute for the selected containment system.

A single-pack route can simplify small batches and routine repainting because it does not require mixing a separate hardener. It still depends on sound preparation, suitable film build and the correct recoat window. Where exposure or the required maintenance interval is more demanding, assess the relevant two-pack epoxy, polyurethane or specialist lining system.

Does fast drying mean the part is ready for service?

No. Touch-dry, recoatable, handleable and fully cured describe different stages. Use the selected product data and actual application conditions to plan each stage. Excessive film build, early overcoating or premature handling can compromise the finish; adding extra thinner or a hardener is not a substitute for the specified application procedure.

DFT = dry-film thickness. These are nominal system totals; individual-coat thicknesses and application conditions belong in the final coating schedule.

SPECIFICATION & APPLICATION

From surface preparation to return to service.

Build the coating schedule around the substrate and the work that can be achieved on site. For refurbishment, assess the adhesion and compatibility of retained coatings before defining repair boundaries.

  • 01Chemicals and concentrations
  • 02Maximum spill contact duration
  • 03Substrate moisture and defects
  • 04Joints, penetrations and cleaning

Record surface preparation, environmental conditions, coverage at details and coat thickness. Allow for the specified recoat and cure periods, then inspect and repair defects before release to service.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Details that affect system selection.

Is splash resistance enough for a bund?

Not necessarily. A spill may remain for much longer than a brief splash and may involve concentrated material. Use the expected containment duration and cleanup regime when selecting the lining.

What belongs in the final technical submission?

Include current TDS and SDS, substrate preparation, the product and thickness schedule, application conditions, inspection criteria and cure requirements. For chemical or immersed service, include written suitability for the actual exposure. Any required certification or durability commitment must be supported by the relevant evidence.

Application boundaries

A coating does not establish bund capacity, structural integrity or leak-tightness at movement joints. The containment design and the lining specification must address those interfaces together.
