Conveyor Structures

Corrosion protection along the material-handling route.

SERVICE & APPLICATIONS

Protection matched to the asset.

Conveyor gantries, trestles, support frames and access steel need protection that suits their location and maintenance cycle. ALKA external and maintenance systems support coating schedules from new fabrication to staged repairs.

Gantry and trestle steel

Choose an atmospheric build for the site exposure and the required visible finish.

Connections and accessways

Specify edge and weld treatment, coverage around fasteners and access for inspection.

Staged shutdowns

Plan cleaning, preparation, recoating and cure around isolated sections and the site work method.

ALKYD PRIMERS · ENAMELS · SINGLE-PACK FINISHING

Single-pack options for selected conveyor steelwork

Removable guards, dry service brackets and suitable fabricated supports may be considered for single-pack primers and enamels where atmospheric exposure and maintenance access support that choice. Separate the external finish from surfaces exposed to carried material, belt contact or repeated process contamination.

Products to assess for the job

Select a complete, compatible primer and finish. The products above are options by role, not a blanket approval to combine every primer and topcoat.

What the applicator or specifier needs

01 · Define the component and duty

Inspect the underside, transfer areas and points where dust or water collects. Define the exposure by component rather than specifying the full conveyor as one environment.

02 · Prepare and prove compatibility

Plan preparation and coating at joints, bolt groups and overlapping guards. Identify areas that can only be coated effectively before reassembly.

03 · Plan handling and return to service

Allow the specified handling and service-cure periods before guards are bolted up or the conveyor restarts. Define how installation damage will be repaired.

Write a usable coating schedule

Specify the substrate and preparation, exact primer and finish, individual-coat dry-film thickness, application method, thinning limits, recoat interval and service-cure requirement from current product data. For repainting, document the retained coating and a representative compatibility trial before full application.

Choose the coating for the exposure

Belt-contact, direct material wear, severe impact and persistently wet transfer zones need separate protection and must not rely on an ordinary enamel finish.

A single-pack route can simplify small batches and routine repainting because it does not require mixing a separate hardener. It still depends on sound preparation, suitable film build and the correct recoat window. Where exposure or the required maintenance interval is more demanding, assess the relevant two-pack epoxy, polyurethane or specialist lining system.

Does fast drying mean the part is ready for service?

No. Touch-dry, recoatable, handleable and fully cured describe different stages. Use the selected product data and actual application conditions to plan each stage. Excessive film build, early overcoating or premature handling can compromise the finish; adding extra thinner or a hardener is not a substitute for the specified application procedure.

DFT = dry-film thickness. These are nominal system totals; individual-coat thicknesses and application conditions belong in the final coating schedule.

SPECIFICATION & APPLICATION

From surface preparation to return to service.

Build the coating schedule around the substrate and the work that can be achieved on site. For refurbishment, assess the adhesion and compatibility of retained coatings before defining repair boundaries.

  • 01Atmospheric exposure
  • 02Retained coating condition
  • 03Isolation and shutdown access
  • 04Detailing around supports and connections

Record surface preparation, environmental conditions, coverage at details and coat thickness. Allow for the specified recoat and cure periods, then inspect and repair defects before release to service.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Details that affect system selection.

Can only damaged sections be repainted?

Local repairs can be practical when the surrounding coating is sound and compatible. Define repair limits, feathered transitions, cleaning and an adhesion or trial-area assessment before selecting the maintenance build.

What belongs in the final technical submission?

Include current TDS and SDS, substrate preparation, the product and thickness schedule, application conditions, inspection criteria and cure requirements. For chemical or immersed service, include written suitability for the actual exposure. Any required certification or durability commitment must be supported by the relevant evidence.

Application boundaries

The coating scope excludes conveyor belts, pulley lagging, bearings and primary wear surfaces. Slip performance of walkways requires a separate surface specification.
