Mine Sites

Protection across the mine, from steelwork to service assets.

SERVICE & APPLICATIONS

Protection matched to the asset.

Mine infrastructure combines exposed structures, maintenance areas and wet-process assets. ALKA coating systems give asset teams a clear way to separate atmospheric corrosion protection from barrier and chemical-lining duties.

Exposed steel

Headframes, gantries and access structures need corrosion protection matched to weather, coastal salts and maintenance access.

Wet service

Pump bases, sumps and washdown areas need a barrier specification based on the substrate and the liquids present.

Planned maintenance

Condition surveys and repair boundaries help the coating schedule fit the shutdown, including preparation and cure.

ALKYD PRIMERS · ENAMELS · SINGLE-PACK FINISHING

Single-pack finishes across the mine site

A mine site also contains workshop frames, fabricated brackets, storage racks, service equipment and other steel in ordinary atmospheric service. Single-pack alkyd primers and protective enamels provide a practical route for these assets where straightforward application, colour identification and planned repainting suit the maintenance strategy.

Products to assess for the job

Select a complete, compatible primer and finish. The products above are options by role, not a blanket approval to combine every primer and topcoat.

What the applicator or specifier needs

01 · Define the component and duty

Split the asset register by exposure. A dry workshop frame, a weather-facing structure and steel beside a wet process each need their own coating decision; the site name alone does not define the duty.

02 · Prepare and prove compatibility

Record the retained coating, corrosion and access to edges and welds. Remove loose coating and contamination, prepare exposed steel and specify spot priming before the finish coat.

03 · Plan handling and return to service

Coordinate coating work with dust-producing activities and handling. Agree the finish, inspection points and time before the equipment returns to service.

Write a usable coating schedule

Specify the substrate and preparation, exact primer and finish, individual-coat dry-film thickness, application method, thinning limits, recoat interval and service-cure requirement from current product data. For repainting, document the retained coating and a representative compatibility trial before full application.

Choose the coating for the exposure

Use a separately selected epoxy, polyurethane or lining system where persistent wetting, salt exposure, process chemicals or abrasive duty govern performance.

A single-pack route can simplify small batches and routine repainting because it does not require mixing a separate hardener. It still depends on sound preparation, suitable film build and the correct recoat window. Where exposure or the required maintenance interval is more demanding, assess the relevant two-pack epoxy, polyurethane or specialist lining system.

Does fast drying mean the part is ready for service?

No. Touch-dry, recoatable, handleable and fully cured describe different stages. Use the selected product data and actual application conditions to plan each stage. Excessive film build, early overcoating or premature handling can compromise the finish; adding extra thinner or a hardener is not a substitute for the specified application procedure.

SPECIFICATION & APPLICATION

From surface preparation to return to service.

Build the coating schedule around the substrate and the work that can be achieved on site. For refurbishment, assess the adhesion and compatibility of retained coatings before defining repair boundaries.

  • 01Location and exposure zones
  • 02Substrate and existing coating
  • 03Access and shutdown periods
  • 04Wet-service chemistry and temperature

Record surface preparation, environmental conditions, coverage at details and coat thickness. Allow for the specified recoat and cure periods, then inspect and repair defects before release to service.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Details that affect system selection.

How should a mine-wide coating schedule be organised?

Group assets by substrate, exposure and maintenance access. Identify new steel separately from retained coatings, then record the build, preparation and inspection requirements against each asset.

What belongs in the final technical submission?

Include current TDS and SDS, substrate preparation, the product and thickness schedule, application conditions, inspection criteria and cure requirements. For chemical or immersed service, include written suitability for the actual exposure. Any required certification or durability commitment must be supported by the relevant evidence.

Application boundaries

A single site-wide coating is rarely the right answer. Assign systems to asset and exposure zones; structural repairs, high-impact wear surfaces and permanent immersion require their own scope.
