Understand the application

Water-based describes the formulation—not the duty rating.

A water-based coating can be a useful option where application conditions and a lower-solvent approach matter. Its suitability still depends on the selected product, substrate and exposure. Ask for the current technical and safety data before agreeing the installation method.

01

Storage and utility rooms

Consider the actual trolley traffic, cleaning routine and substrate condition. Light-duty storage is a different brief from hard-wheel forklift operation.

02

Refurbishment projects

Review existing coatings for adhesion and compatibility. Grinding, removal or a test area may be needed; a new coating will not stabilise a failing old film.

03

Clear protective finishes

Where a clear finish is required, agree appearance on the actual substrate. A clear system will show repairs, colour variation and surface preparation marks.

Compare the pathways

Choose the system around the service conditions.

Water-based epoxy enquiries Review the ALKA150 / ALKA151 range with ALKA Confirm intended use, appearance, compatible substrate and current coating schedule.
Waterborne clear polyurethane enquiries Review ALKA251 where specified Confirm compatibility with the underlying coating, sheen and application conditions.
Heavy traffic, thermal or aggressive chemical service Compare a dedicated ALKA industrial system Water-based formulation alone does not establish suitability for these exposures.

Selection guide only. Current product data, substrate assessment and the approved project specification determine suitability and the final build.

Confirm the exact product first. ALKA150 / ALKA151 enquiries and ALKA251 clear-finish enquiries require different product checks. Obtain the current technical data for appearance, spreading rate, recoat window, drying conditions and permitted service.

Design and installation

Control the installation environment.

Moisture still matters

Water-based does not mean the coating can tolerate rising damp or wet concrete. Assess slab moisture and the need for a compatible moisture-control approach.

Allow water to leave the film

Temperature, relative humidity, ventilation and coat thickness affect drying. Distinguish touch-dry, recoat and full service times using the selected product data.

Check the existing surface

Remove grease, dust and weak material. Confirm adhesion, porosity and compatibility with sealers or previous coatings before committing to a full area.

From enquiry to installation

Get the right people and information in place.

Start with a technical conversation and a clear project brief.

ALKA can help review the duty, identify a suitable system pathway and provide product information for your project. For installation, ask about an approved applicator referral for your location and scope; suitability and availability are confirmed for the project.

Practical questions

Before you choose the floor.

Does water-based mean odour-free or harmless?

No. Review the safety data, ventilation and site controls for the selected product. Water-based terminology is not a substitute for an exposure assessment.

Can I use it over any old coating?

No. The old finish must be sound, compatible and prepared appropriately. A trial area or removal may be required.

Which product gives the finish I want?

Ask ALKA to confirm the product and complete coating schedule against a sample and the current technical data. Clear and coloured appearances should be agreed explicitly.

Specify the details that determine performance.

Controlled roller application illustrates why film thickness, ventilation and drying conditions matter to a water-based finish.

Distinguish drying from curing

Water loss and resin curing both influence the finished film. Cold surfaces, high humidity, poor air movement or excessive film thickness can delay readiness. Agree the application conditions, coat intervals and full-service release using the exact product data.

Choose clear or coloured deliberately

A clear coating can show patch repairs, grinding marks and uneven substrate colour. A pigmented finish changes appearance but does not hide substrate defects indefinitely. Approve a prepared and coated sample using the intended number of coats.

Assess occupied-space constraints

Review the safety data and the ventilation, isolation and occupancy plan with the applicator. Water-based does not mean zero emissions or immediate occupancy. Protect adjacent finishes and avoid contamination between preparation and coating.

Before ordering or application

Use the current TDS and safety data for the exact product and supplied kit. Confirm substrate preparation, moisture limits, mixing, coverage, coat thickness, recoat intervals and full-service cure. Where a direct PDF is not listed, request the product-specific document from ALKA technical support before proceeding.

More answers for your project

Can I thin the coating with water?

Only if the current product instructions explicitly allow it, and only by the stated amount and method. Adding water to improve workability without approval can affect coverage, film formation and performance. Different water-based products do not share one dilution rule.

Why might a clear finish turn cloudy?

Possible causes include moisture, condensation, film thickness or incomplete drying. The cause should be checked against the actual product and site conditions before recoating. Applying another clear layer over an unresolved defect may preserve the problem.

Can it be used on damp concrete?

The acceptable substrate condition is product-specific. Water-based formulation does not establish resistance to rising moisture or hydrostatic pressure. Assess moisture and the slab construction, then confirm whether the selected system is suitable.

Where are the downloadable TDS files?

The product pages below identify the range, but verified direct PDF files for these three products were not available at this review. Use the product-specific TDS request links to obtain the current documents before ordering or installation; another product’s PDF should not be substituted.

Make the quote a complete scope

Ask the proposal to identify preparation and repairs, the selected ALKA products, coating stages, finish sample, joint and edge details, installation stages and the permitted return to service. Include cleaning instructions and the technical documents in the handover so future maintenance follows the installed system.

Tell us about your project

Leave your contact details and tell us about your water-based coatings project. Include the location, approximate floor area, current surface condition and preferred timing. ALKA can help recommend a suitable system and discuss an applicator referral for your project.

Water based epoxy floor coatings — Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne

Review the ALKA water-based range for suitable floors and refurbishment. Formulation type alone does not establish traffic capacity, moisture tolerance or suitability for an occupied building.

Water based epoxy floor coatings in Sydney

For Sydney refurbishment projects, identify the existing coating and intended traffic. Ask which primer, preparation and water-based finish can form a compatible system.

Water based epoxy floor coatings in Brisbane

For Brisbane projects, provide site humidity, ventilation and slab moisture information. Drying and film formation need suitable conditions even when a product uses water as its carrier.

Water based epoxy floor coatings in Melbourne

For Melbourne interiors, review substrate temperature and ventilation during drying. Confirm recoat and full-service requirements from the exact product data before scheduling access.
