LNG Facilities

Protect ambient-service steel around LNG infrastructure.

SERVICE & APPLICATIONS

Protection matched to the asset.

LNG terminals include atmospheric steelwork, coastal structures and support assets alongside cryogenic process equipment. ALKA systems address defined ambient-service steel and maintenance applications; the coating duty follows the temperature and exposure at the actual surface.

Ambient structural steel

Pipe racks, access platforms and support frames need an external build selected for the site environment.

Coastal structures

Above-waterline marine atmosphere requires a different selection from tidal, splash and immersed surfaces.

Maintenance assets

Assess substrate type, retained coatings and access before planning repair preparation and application.

ALKYD PRIMERS · ENAMELS · SINGLE-PACK FINISHING

Ambient ancillary finishes in LNG facilities

Workshop equipment, sheltered covers and selected service frames at ambient temperature can be assessed for single-pack protective primers and enamels. Cryogenic equipment, insulated surfaces and highly exposed structural steel have different requirements and must remain separately specified.

Products to assess for the job

Select a complete, compatible primer and finish. The products above are options by role, not a blanket approval to combine every primer and topcoat.

What the applicator or specifier needs

01 · Define the component and duty

Identify ambient, hot and cryogenic surfaces and the boundaries of insulation. Record condensation, coastal exposure and cleaning requirements before selecting a finish.

02 · Prepare and prove compatibility

Inspect existing paint and metal condition, including support and connection details. Agree the substrate preparation and compatibility of any retained coating.

03 · Plan handling and return to service

Coordinate ventilation, coating cure and equipment handover with the facility program. Record finish and repair requirements for replacement components.

Write a usable coating schedule

Specify the substrate and preparation, exact primer and finish, individual-coat dry-film thickness, application method, thinning limits, recoat interval and service-cure requirement from current product data. For repainting, document the retained coating and a representative compatibility trial before full application.

Choose the coating for the exposure

This single-pack route is not a cryogenic, insulated-surface, LNG-contact or severe marine exposure specification.

A single-pack route can simplify small batches and routine repainting because it does not require mixing a separate hardener. It still depends on sound preparation, suitable film build and the correct recoat window. Where exposure or the required maintenance interval is more demanding, assess the relevant two-pack epoxy, polyurethane or specialist lining system.

Does fast drying mean the part is ready for service?

No. Touch-dry, recoatable, handleable and fully cured describe different stages. Use the selected product data and actual application conditions to plan each stage. Excessive film build, early overcoating or premature handling can compromise the finish; adding extra thinner or a hardener is not a substitute for the specified application procedure.

DFT = dry-film thickness. These are nominal system totals; individual-coat thicknesses and application conditions belong in the final coating schedule.

SPECIFICATION & APPLICATION

From surface preparation to return to service.

Build the coating schedule around the substrate and the work that can be achieved on site. For refurbishment, assess the adhesion and compatibility of retained coatings before defining repair boundaries.

  • 01Ambient or cryogenic duty
  • 02Coastal exposure zone
  • 03Substrate and existing coating
  • 04Insulation, spill and owner requirements

Record surface preparation, environmental conditions, coverage at details and coat thickness. Allow for the specified recoat and cure periods, then inspect and repair defects before release to service.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Details that affect system selection.

Does use at an LNG facility mean cryogenic suitability?

No. A coating on ambient structural steel faces a different duty from one exposed to cryogenic temperatures or LNG spills. Specify the temperature and credible exposure of each surface, with appropriate test evidence for specialist areas.

What belongs in the final technical submission?

Include current TDS and SDS, substrate preparation, the product and thickness schedule, application conditions, inspection criteria and cure requirements. For chemical or immersed service, include written suitability for the actual exposure. Any required certification or durability commitment must be supported by the relevant evidence.

Application boundaries

Cryogenic service, LNG spill exposure, cold insulation and fire protection are specialist duties. These atmospheric and maintenance systems do not establish cryogenic or LNG-contact suitability.
