What each treatment actually changes

Common concrete finish pathways
PathwayBest fitMain limitation
Decorative cementitious resurfacingRenew colour and texture of sound existing concrete, especially a driveway, path or patio. ALKACRETE 300 is ALKA’s cementitious resurfacing product to review. It bonds to the existing slab; it does not rebuild structural capacity or stop continuing movement.
Compatible sealer or paving finishRefresh and protect an existing sound decorative surface where a new overlay is unnecessary. Explore ALKASEAL or ask about ALKA Pave.Existing sealer identity, adhesion, weather exposure and recoat needs must be checked.
Resin flooring systemSeamless, easy-to-clean workshop, warehouse or other service floor where mechanical and chemical duty drives the choice. Compare ALKA-908 and ALKA-901.Needs compatible substrate, preparation, moisture and service design; ordinary indoor epoxy should not be assumed suitable in direct sun.
Structural repair or slab replacementUnstable, badly settled, severely cracked or poorly drained concrete.A coating can be considered only after the cause and structural repair strategy are resolved.

“Resurfacing” is often used loosely for anything from a new cement-based overlay to a clear reseal. Specify what will actually be removed, repaired and installed. ALKA’s concrete resurfacing application page separates resurfacing, resealing and repair or replacement; its concrete product range provides product starting points.

Check whether the slab can support a bonded finish

Inspect cracks, hollow or delaminated areas, weak edges, spalling, patch repairs, old paint, oil penetration and drainage. Distinguish a stable surface blemish from continuing movement or settlement. Water entering from below or ponding on top can undermine any surface choice. A driveway also has steering and tyre shear near gates, turning points and parking positions; a patio may need texture that stays practical to clean.

Plan a trial area if an old sealer or unknown coating is present. A visually clean surface can still contain curing compounds, silicone, grease or weak laitance. ICRI’s concrete surface preparation guidance treats cleaning, removal of unsound material and an appropriate surface profile as part of coating and overlay selection. The American Concrete Institute’s work on bonded overlays also highlights substrate texture and condition in bond performance. No single preparation method fits every overlay; the selected product’s current instructions determine the final method and acceptance criteria.

Stop and investigate: movement across cracks, subsidence, recurrent damp patches, hydrostatic pressure, poor drainage or loose concrete. A decorative layer can conceal these issues temporarily while they continue underneath.

Match the finish to how the area is used

Outdoor driveways and patios

For a sound slab where the goal is new colour or a textured pattern, evaluate ALKACRETE 300 with an approved finishing or sealing schedule. Confirm tyre loading, hot tyres, sun, rain, pool chemicals if nearby and the slip characteristics of the final surface when wet. Outdoor appearance changes with light and weather, so review physical samples on the actual substrate. If the current decorative surface is sound, a compatible clean and reseal may be a better scope than another overlay. Ask what maintenance and resealing are expected for the chosen finish rather than assuming a permanent “maintenance-free” surface.

Garages and workshops

A garage with oils, frequent cleaning or a desired seamless finish points toward a resin system. The ALKA-908 workshop system is a more relevant discussion for service bays and wheeled traffic than a decorative driveway overlay. Specify loads, turning, impact, spills, cleaning products, slip needs and any sunlight at open doors. The primer, body and finish must be selected together; a UV-resistant finish by itself does not prove that every underlying layer is suitable for exterior exposure.

Warehouses and production areas

Identify forklift wheel type and frequency, pallet-jack traffic, racking loads, abrasion, process chemicals and whether a smooth cleanable finish is required. ALKA-901 is one high-build indoor epoxy option; ALKA’s heavy-duty floor guide compares workshop, epoxy and PU-cement pathways. Subdivide a facility into zones if hot washdown, chemical exposure and dry traffic need different builds. Slip resistance must be balanced against cleanability and the actual cleaning method.

For an exposed industrial deck or outdoor vehicle surface, obtain a dedicated system review; neither a patio coating nor an indoor floor build should be carried across automatically.

Specify the work in the order it will happen

  1. Survey: map cracks, joints, falls, contaminants, old coatings and wet zones. Record expected traffic and cleaning. Decide whether repairs or drainage changes are part of the project.
  2. Trial and prepare: confirm how the existing coating will be removed or tested, what surface profile is needed and how repairs will be blended. Do not bury movement joints under a continuous finish.
  3. Approve a sample: agree colour, texture, edge detail, visual variation and wet slip requirement. Confirm the actual coating and sealer combination on site if compatibility is uncertain.
  4. Apply and hand over: follow the current ALKA TDS for substrate condition, primers, coverage, recoat and cure; protect the area until it is ready for traffic. Document products and give the owner cleaning and maintenance instructions.

A bonded decorative finish takes the shape and movement of the concrete beneath it. Resin thickness can improve surface uniformity, but cannot correct major level differences, active cracks or failed substrate. The project specification should state what happens at existing joints, drains, thresholds and walls so those details are priced and installed, not improvised after coating begins.

Frequently asked questions

Can resurfacing cover cracked concrete?

Only after the crack cause and movement are assessed and an appropriate repair or joint detail is specified. An active crack is likely to reflect through a bonded overlay.

Is epoxy better than cementitious resurfacing outdoors?

There is no universal winner. Decorative cementitious systems are a starting point for sound exposed driveways and patios; resin systems are selected for defined service duty. Sun, moisture, traffic and slip needs determine the actual build.

Should an old sealed driveway be resurfaced or resealed?

If the slab and decorative finish remain sound and appearance is the only concern, investigate compatible cleaning and resealing first. Failed layers or deeper defects change the scope.
